A Case Study of Gestalt Group Counseling for Self-acceptance and Self-esteem Improvement in Middle-aged Women with Depressive Tendencies

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of gestalt group counseling on the self-acceptance and self-esteem of middle-aged women with depressive tendencies. The study participants were three middle-aged women from depressive tendencies. The Gestalt group counseling was conducted through Zoom for 16 sessions, twice a week, to improve self-esteem by accepting oneself including noticing body-emotion-thoughts and contacting and resolving problems. For group effectiveness, quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis of the process of change during each participant's group participation were investigated through the self-acceptance scale and self-esteem scale. As a result of the study, all three study subjects improved their self-acceptance scores and self-esteem scores, recognized their body sensations, emotions, and thoughts, and positively accepted their negative aspects. Also, self-esteem was positively changed. Therefore, it was found that Gestalt group counseling was effective in helping middle-aged women with depressive tendencies to live their own lives free of depressive tendencies by improving self-acceptance and self-esteem.
