The Effect of Ability for Social Life of the Working Disabled on Employment

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to verify how interpersonal skills, daily living skills, and participation in social activities of the working disabled affect employment. For this goal, 3,995 people with wage work disabilities were analyzed by using the survey data on the employment panel for the disabled established by the Korea Employment Agency for the Disabled. Study results show that: first, out of demographic characteristics such as sex, age, highest level of education, marital status, average monthly income and degree of disability, sex, highest level of education, marital status and average monthly income have a significantly positive effect on employment, but age and degree of disability have a significantly negative effect. Second, in the sub-factors of ability for social life of the working disabled, results show that interpersonal competency, ability for daily life and participation in social activities have a positive effect on employment. Political · practical implications based on the results are: first, a specialized employment support program for women and middle-aged with disability must be prepared, second, this study also suggests that a plan for practical · institutional improvement for supported employment system and personal assistance system in workplace are necessary for improving ability of the disabled for their social life.
